Dreams Over Pink

This is an oil painting.

These lovely pink hues are all Rose Madder.

Until 2023, my drawings and paintings varied in size, often being random dimensions like A3 or 30×40 cm (approximately 11.8×15.7 inches). I tended to “crop” the canvas or paper instead of the image, resulting in inconsistent sizes. However, I was still working within those dimensions.

At one point, I was commissioned to create a 100×150 cm (approximately 39.4×59.1 inches) painting. To gauge the equipment and paint quantity I might need, I decided to create this piece, which measures 60×66 cm (approximately 23.6×26 inches). While it’s not as large as my ultimate goal, it was significantly bigger than my usual works.

This experience was quite revealing. It’s no surprise that my “extremely large” brushes (sizes 19-20), which I typically use for quickly under-painting large areas, suddenly felt too small. I anticipated this, but I didn’t expect them to feel that inadequate. What truly surprised me was how much I still relied on my size 0 and smaller brushes, even with this larger canvas.

You might think that a bigger size would reduce the need for finer brushes – that’s what I thought – but I found that the increased size urged me to add even more details. 🤣

Well, the subject certainly deserved the extra attention, so I have no complaints!
