The Demon of the Three Rivers – Chapter 09

Also, do remember, this is a prequel to “The House in the Lake”, so, if you haven’t read “The House in the Lake”, there will be some spoilers.

The people of the land were praying to the God of the Lake for everything they could think of. Even for him to help them with their egotistical and evil wishes and deeds. But this boy’s message felt so nice. He would read it again and again in different moments and the effect would always be the same. It caused him to smile.

So, Lugh created a small wooden box and put the letter in it, to keep it for the next time he wanted to smile again.

Then, a few days later, the kid sent another float.

“I haven’t told you my name. I’m Kane. You are the God of the Lake, right? I still can smell your scent. It’s such a nice smell. Do you have flowers on your rock?”

A new smile was drawn on Lugh’s face.

And the kid continued to send him messages like these every two or three days. And the messages always were telling him something about Kane. Always they were telling him something good about himself. Always they were asking simple questions, without a request.

Then, a few months afterwards, the first request came. But even this request had something innocent in it.

“Hi! How are you? My father is dying. Can you say a good word for him to your friends? If you can’t, it’s ok. Can you smile to me again, instead? You have the most beautiful smile.”

And then, a little while later, a very different message arrived.

“I learned what you did. You are not a god. You are a beast! One day, I’ll come to kill you.”

And Lugh jumped in joy. “Thank you, Kane! Indeed, you are unique!”

From then on, Kane would send messages more sparingly, but he would keep calling him a beast and a murderer and evil and wrong.

And the boy grew up to become a young lad. And then, on the first full moon of the year, he sent, “This year, I’m coming to kill you, for sure!”

And in that spring, one morning, Lugh heard Kane’s voice in his head. “Get ready to die, Murderer!”

And Lugh went to the porch, to wait, eagerly, for the boy, who had set his boat’s course towards the rock, to come. He made sure there were no waves where the reefs were, for he wanted Kane to arrive safely.

And the boat reached the rock. And Lugh went down to welcome his guest.

“Welcome. You came! At long last, you did!”
